Commonly mistaken for shiso, Sesame leaf (perilla frutescens) is an entirely different plant whose unique flavor can best be described as herbal, earthy, and slightly minty. It contains notes of shiso but is far less floral. Primarily used in Korean cooking, it is a staple ingredient for Ssam (literally "wrap") which layers several other leafy greens with rice, protein, and a dollop of ssamjang, a soy bean paste condiment.
